My first hand at writing a movie review- "Dhobi Ghat"

Director: Kiran Rao

Cast:Prateik Babbar as Zoeb Sheikh aka Munna
Monica Dogra as Shai
Aamir Khan as Arun
Kritika Malhotra as Yasmin

Theme: The movie is just like a daily Mumbai magazine where you explore different shades and images of this mighty city as you turn the pages, some articles about the lives of people living in this city and the pictures of common man residing in the city. The portrayal of four people in those articles through their acting, the background score, the cinematography flips it into a movie. It covers lives of four people revolving around the soul of Mumbai.

Plot: The movie starts with Munna, a dhobi who watches television along with his pals and they giggle about his ambition ofbecoming a film actor. As a dhobi, he delivers clothes to Arun, a painter whos stays alone in his flat. Later is seen an art exhibition of Arun's paintings organized by his friend Vatsala, where he meets Shai, who is an investment banker from USA and is in Mumbai for pursuing her hobby of street photography. Arun and Shai share some time at exhibition and Shai ends up at Aruns place at night where they make out and she eventually falls for him. Since Arun is a loner and is not willing to get into any relationship, prefers to stay aloof from Shai. Arun shifts to a different house in Mohd Ali road and gives his new address to Munna. Shai, while recieving clothes from Munna happens to know about Arun and his new address.

Arun in the other house finds some video cassettes and other valuables of Yasmin, who happens to be the previous resident of the house. Arun develops curiousity about the video cassettes and the valuables. While watching those video cassettes, he comes to know these were meant to be the taped video messages for Imraan, bother of Yasmin, a muslim woman telling about herself, different places and people of Mumbai, her tensed relationship with her husband who is interested in some other woman. Arun develops interest in it and begins portraying her on a paper in the form of paintings.

Shai tries to befriend Munna, to know about Arun, who happens to be a divorcee and fathers a son. Munna tells Shai about his ambition and makes her click his photographs for portfolio and eventually falls for her. Later, Shai and Arun meet in Mohd. Ali Road and they end up having a coffee at his place when Munna arrives and watches them together. Munna comes to know about Shai's interest.

Now heres the climax. Arun while watching the last taped video message, comes to know that Yasmin is tired of her life and comes to conclusion that she committed suicide in this house, so he becomes erratic and promptly shifts to a new place. Munna shocked by his brother, Salims murder by some gang members, shifts to Jogeshwari. Shai is seen alone without Arun and Munna and waits at Dhobi Ghat, when one day she meets Munna, where she is handed over Arun's new address. Shai is seen with tears, leaving us in a confusion, whether she was interested in Arun or Munna. Arun is seen staring at his paintings depicting Yasmin in defferent shades and finally the movie ends with a Camera still of Mumbai city in day light, evening and night...

Drawbacks: The movie ends abruptly, leaving behind many questions. Monica Dogra looks good but falls short on acting. The Yasmin part feels stretched. The movie is different from mainstream cinema and not watchable for Masala movie loving Indian person. It is made for masses abroad who applaude artistic movies.

Why to watch? : The background score by Gustavo makes you flow into the movie. The cinematography clinches your eyes at every moment and direction by debutant Kiran Rao leaves you speechless.
Go for it, if you are an art movie lover nd love watching movies different from mainstream cinemas.
